On Monday the 18th of September we held our monthly meeting and our speaker for the evening was Caroline Sheldrick, with a talk on Medicinal herbs, Caroline a licensed herbalist with a medical degree explained how alternative treatment works & how she works with GPs, & holds local clinics for her treatment. It as very interesting to learn just how much the pharmaceutical industry uses a lot of natural plants in the make up of modern drugs. After the talk there were a number of creams & balms available for sale along with advice on various conditions. The member’s competition “Any vegetable” was won by your humble scribe with a beetroot. Next month will be our AGM , on November the 20th, with reports from the chairman, secretary & treasurer. Appointment of the 2018 committee and election of new committee members, followed by any other business. After the Club business there will be a slide show of members photographs covering Club events throughout the year. The member’s monthly competition, will be “any vegetable”, as this is the last competition of the year let us have plenty of entries, we all have some thing in the garden we can bring along. On Saturday the 23rd of September, we held our annual Autumn show, and were blessed with a fine sunny day, this year we had an increase in the number of exhibitors & also the number of entries. The standards were high with the hall filled with exhibits, the children’s sections were well supported. Outside we had our usual sales stall with a good selection of donated plants plus our “garden junk” selection, all items donated by members, this proved to be very popular with very few items left over at the end of the day, many thanks to all those club members who generously donate items, thanks as well to Jess Bailey & her team for running this, which produced a valuable amount towards Club funds. Once again a great show & we all extend our thanks to Julie Dowsett, our show secretary, for doing such a wonderful job organising the show and all the hard work it takes. On the subject of thanks, we much appreciated all those who helped set up the show, helped as stewards, run the judges lunches & afternoon teas and especially those members who helped clean up after the show , in record time. We all look forward to next years show hoping to make it even larger! On a final note, “Every man reaps what he sows in this life – except the amateur gardener”.
