On Monday the 20th, we held our last meeting of the year holding our 73rd AGM,(founded in 1944) with a good attendance from members, our chairman’s report went on to say how being persuaded to join the committee, a few years ago, he now found himself as chairman! He stated that the club had had another good year and how much he had enjoyed his year as chairman, and thanked the committee for all their help, the chairman made special reference to the two splendid shows that Julie Dowsett had organised for the Club & thanked Jess Bailey for organising the evening open garden visit & running our shop, and his thanks also went to to Holly Barrand for getting the Club’s web site up and running again. The secretaries report ; hoped that the members had enjoyed the 2017 speakers and informed them of a varied selection of different speakers for the coming year. Members were advised that we would holding our bi-annual “special speaker night” on the5th of March, when the guest will be Roy Lancaster OBE,CBE, well know TV a radio broadcaster & vice chairman of the Royal Horticultural Society, tickets now on sale. The treasurers report showed how well the Club had done financially, with everyone present having a set of figures and an audited balance sheet, showing the Club to be in a healthy financial position, in no small part to our plant sale, shows, club shop and raffles. The existing committee was voted “en bloc”, for a further years service. There followed a slide show, to music, of the Club’s activities throughout the year, our thanks go to Norman Mathews for putting on this splendid show, during the evening there were available a great selection of drinks & nibbles. The evening concluded with the raffle, with all the prizes being donated by the committee members. Our speaker this month, 15th of January, will be Tim Miles head gardener of the Cotswold Wild life Park, visitors very welcome. The members monthly competition will be Spring flowers.
A final thought, ”The best time to plant a tree, was twenty years ago, the second best time is now”!
